2026 Ebola Outbreak May 16, 2026

As of May 17, 2026, the Ebola outbreak has been named a foreseeable or known event, which may affect travel insurance coverage depending upon the carrier and the plan.

Zurich: Choice/Cruise/Trip Cancellation Plans
These plans treat Ebola as a covered sickness. Ebola-related claims may be covered if they meet the policy terms and the insured is not traveling against the advice or recommendations made by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), or the United States Department of State (DOS).  If the destination is not subject to an applicable CDC, WHO, or DOS restriction and an insured contracts Ebola during the trip, the claim would generally be evaluated under the policy’s medical, evacuation, interruption, delay, and quarantine benefits, subject to all terms and exclusions.

Crum & Forster: Elite Plan
This plan treats Ebola as a covered sickness, as long as the plan was purchased prior to May 17,2026 when the outbreak became a known event. Ebola-related claims may be covered according to policy terms, based off the language of the benefit.

Starr: Priority Plus Plan
This plan treats Ebola as a covered sickness but includes an exclusion for epidemic declared prior to the scheduled departure date. Ebola is considered an epidemic as of May 17, 2026. Additionally, all travel coverage for Sudan and South Sudan are currently restricted under these plans.

Starr: Spirit Airlines Closure May 2, 2026

Date Spirit Airlines default was a known event: May 2, 2026 – Spirit Airlines announced they are shutting down all operations.

How this affects travel insurance coverage:

  • Our plans may provide covered benefits if the Insured’s Trip is affected by Spirit Airlines’ closure and bankruptcy/liquidation.
  • Coverage can vary by state. Insured must review their policy for possible benefits under Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Missed Connection, or Trip Delay for possible benefits related to airline bankruptcy or financial insolvency.
  • Important: Because Spirit’s shutdown is now a “known event,” new policies bought on or after May 2, 2026, will NOT cover losses from this event.

Please visit https://spiritrestructuring.com for more information about Spirit’s wind-down process. As a first step, we suggest you review the process Spirit outlined on their website: “Spirit will automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment. Guests who booked flights via a travel agent should contact the travel agent directly to request a refund. Compensation for Guests who booked flights using any other methods, including a voucher, credit or Free Spirit points, will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy process.”

Crum & Forster: Spirit Airlines Closure May 2, 2026

Travel Protection Plans that include travel insurance underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company may provide benefits that can be triggered by the closure and liquidation of Spirit Airlines. Coverage can vary by State, so you should review your plan document for possible benefits under Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Missed Connection, or Trip Delay as these coverages may provide protection for losses resulting from financial insolvency in certain circumstances. Since this event is no longer unforeseen, policies issued on or after May 2, 2026 will not cover this event.
